    Purpose of removing grease

    in General Discussion

Hi steve. I was just wondering what was the purpose of removing grease from ball bearings. I was wondering if it was all right to use them greased for the first 6 months and then eventually change them to non-greased ball bearings

The purpose is to minimize friction as much as possible. Quick bearing swing tests would average 10 minutes with sealed bearings and 20 minutes with clean bearings.

The sealed bearings would probably still work with just a bit more drive weight. They might push most of the grease out of the way so they run just as well. Or they might attract dust and run worse over time. It is an easy experiment if you want to try it.
