Debug Hints

32 day easy build stopped running

I printed 2 of these, 1 for myself and another for my Father. Both are using the Rev 2 updates, mine is in standard PLA, the gears for my Fathers I think are silk PLA.

Mine ran for 2 months without issue, now is exhibits all the symptoms of the sticky gear issue, my Father ran for about a month before exhibiting the same issue.

In both cases we have ruled out the pendulum, it swings for 20+ minutes. He has had more time than I to investigate - he's retired! He has found that the debug guide of a weight directly on the lines doesn't work, I think it is 1lb in the guide, but it won't power the drive train, a little nudge from the gear with the internal ratchet an it will run for a short while before stopping again.

Any ideas? Any idea on how we figure out the issue?

Most gears with a set screw can be epoxied to the shaft instead of using the screw. The forces are small and very few ever need to be taken apart once they are assembled.

Another trick is to pinch the length of the arbor in a clamp to start the set screw before final assembly. This forces the screw to cut threads instead of pushing the two halves apart. The holes are taller than the width to minimize the risk of splitting. The sidewalls of the holes are supposed to do most of the work in holding the screw. However, layer adhesion issues may still have a weakness along the layer lines. Maybe try increasing the print temperature. PrusaSlicer has been slowly increasing PLA print temperature from 200 degrees up to 220 in the latest release. I almost never have layer adhesion issues anymore.
